Coast Guard repatriates 46 Cuban migrants

MIAMI -- The Coast Guard has repatriated 46 Cuban migrants picked up in
the waters off the Florida Keys.

The migrants were returned to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba, on Friday. Coast
Guard officials say the migrants were found in three separate interdictions.

On Sept. 2, 11 migrants were spotted in a rustic vessel south of
Marathon. Later that day, 18 migrants were found in another rustic
vessel south of the Marquesas Keys.

Seventeen migrants were found Wednesday in a rustic vessel south of Big
Pine Key.

The Coast Guard gave the migrants food, water and basic medical care
before returning them to Cuba.

Capt. Mark Fedor said Tuesday that migrants "put their lives at grave
risk" when they trust smugglers or take to the sea aboard unseaworthy
vessels.
